Why Is Idaho Fish and Game Placing Animal Decoys In The Woods?
Obviously, when you're hunting in Idaho, there are some basic rules you'll need to follow:
- Wear bright colors to avoid your fellow hunters mistaking you for prey
- Bring lots of snacks so you don't get hangry in the tree stand
- Be quiet
- Don't shoot the decoys
...it's that last part that's the sticking point for us.
Um, so Idaho Fish and Game are actually placing animal decoys out in the wilderness? Why?
To catch evil-doers, that's why!
Jokes aside, Idaho Fish and Game actually have a strategy when it comes to hiding game decoys in the woods: To catch hunters who aren't playing by the rules.
The decoys are strategically placed in locations where hunters should not be targeting and shooting at animals. Meaning, if a hunter takes a pot shot at one of the faux-creatures, they're doing something wrong, and could be facing consequences.
So, next time you're hunting in Idaho (being very cautious, of course), be extra leery of that buck you spot off in the distance. If you notice it's not moving for an extended period of time, it might be a decoy. Don't shoot the decoys.
At the bar and you see a cutie? Shoot your shot.
Stoic animal in the woods standing motionless? Don't shoot your shot.

Decoys, and cougars. Be on the lookout for both of those.
Don't believe us? Check out this shocking scene where a wild cougar encountered some local Idaho hunting dogs. Not something we thought we'd be seeing today, but it's absolutely fascinating.
