As the final days of Christmas begin to tick away and you look to finalize your last few presents to buy, make sure to be cautious this time of year. Many of us will be looking to overnight a gift to make sure it gets to its destination in time for Christmas or to make sure it arrives at our doorstep in time to wrap and put under the tree, but in doing so, you may be opening yourself up to a few scams this holiday season. As mentioned last week, Idaho is not as vulnerable as other states to identity theft and fraud, but that doesn't mean it won't happen and doesn't mean other scams aren't targeting Idaho residents this holiday season.

As you await the arrival of your packages and time begins to run out and your stress rises, make sure to be cautious of the 'updates' you receive by email. With so many eyes on the mail and delivery services this time of year, many of us will be checking our emails frequently to track packages, and there may be an email or two that tells you your packages have been delayed, lost, or that they need confirmation before continuing to ship. Unless an email comes directly from the site or seller you ordered your package from, do not open it or reply to it. Many scams are looking to take advantage of your stress this time of year, and if you aren't paying attention, you will fall for one of them.

You may receive emails that look like they are from Amazon, but make sure to check spelling, and capitalization, and make sure that it shows something you ordered in the email or you are being scammed. If you see any emails coming through talking about packages delayed, canceled, or lost, if it does not come directly from the site you ordered it from, then don't open it. If you have already opened it, make sure to read through the whole email before clicking on anything, and do not give any information until you are sure it is legit. If you ever question whether an email is scamming you, ask for a second or third opinion. Many of these emails will end up in your 'spam' folder which will help you dodge any potential scam, but for those few that sneak in, make sure to do your due diligence.

Be careful this holiday season, and make sure you take extra caution as you finalize your shopping and stress about your packages arriving. Double, triple, and even possibly quadruple check every email that you question this time of year. Be safe, be smart, and avoid scams as best you can this holiday season.
