The Snake River in Idaho
While there are certainly many spots in the river that are dangerous to swim in, there are little channels that aren't directly on the river that you can enjoy. Ritter Island near Hagerman offers a prime example where there is an area not a part of the main river that is shallow and allows for good swimming with much lower risks. The water is clear, shallow, and while the current can be strong, it is unlikely to take a swimmer into deeper waters. The river is great for being on a paddle board, a kayak, or a boat. Once on a device, there are hidden gems along the river, such as Blue Heart, that is little to no current and crystal clear water that allows for swimming, without being in open water. While hypothermia is still a concern, it is one of the safest areas to swim along the river.
