Magic Valley School Closures for January 17th, 2024

The Magic Valley has been under a winter weather advisory since midnight. Western Magic Valley and southern Twin Falls County were warned of a possible 2 - 4 inches of snow to add to the blizzard received this past weekend. Being forewarned doesn’t mean there won’t be a point where snowplows and preparation are enough.

Here are the area schools that are canceled for January 17th:

• Buhl School District (Canceled)
• Canyonside Christian School (Canceled)
• Castleford School District (Canceled)
• Clear Lakes Christian Academy (Canceled)
• College of Southern Idaho (Was delayed, now canceled)
• Dietrich School District (Delayed 2 hours)
• Filer School District (Canceled)
• Gem Prep (Canceled)
• Gooding School District (Canceled)
• Hansen School District (Canceled)
• Heritage Academy (Canceled)
• Idaho School for Deaf/Blind (Canceled)
• Immanuel Lutheran (Canceled)
• Jerome School District (Canceled)
• Kimberly School District (Canceled)
• Lighthouse Christian (Canceled)
• Minidoka School District (Canceled)
• Murtaugh Schools (Canceled)

Road Conditions To Blame For Recent School Closures

Road conditions are still not in optimal condition from the last system that canceled schools on Monday, January 15th. This additional system left schools having to make tough decisions after already losing class time this week. Schools have to decide if buses can make the trek to pick up children in a timely and safe manner.

Even after roads have been plowed, many areas are snow-packed and icy. A traffic light was damaged on Tuesday, January 16th, when a car lost control due to the road conditions.
