Following some overnight snow and icy conditions, we're keeping an eye on the possibility of school closures across various districts in the Magic Valley. More precipitation is expected this morning—and possibly more tonight—and it’s likely to rain in the valleys, which will most likely limit the number of closures.

That said, Southern Idaho weather can change on a dime. We'll stay in close contact with area school districts and post any updates on closures right here as they come in.

Common Reasons for School Closures in Southern Idaho

Weather-related school closures in Southern Idaho are usually caused by more than just snowfall. A common factor is the combination of snow and strong winds, which can create dangerous drifting that blocks roads and prevents buses from running safely. Even a small amount of snow can lead to closures if it’s drifting significantly.

Significant snowfall on its own can also prompt closures, especially when accumulation happens quickly. Icy conditions are another major factor, as they can make roads treacherous for buses, parents, and student drivers.

Beyond weather, schools sometimes close due to widespread illness among students or staff, or because of facility issues like HVAC system failures.
