Major Stores Open and Closed on Thanksgiving in 2024 in the Gem State

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and time to finish grocery shopping is running out. The stores will be busy from now until the holiday, as well as finding every item on your list could get tough, as shelves begin to run bare. While typically you can make a late run if something is forgotten, or stop by the store on the way to someone's home if you need to bring something, Thanksgiving doesn't allow that option at all stores. Many stores will be closed this holiday in Idaho, and it is important to know who is open and closed this year. Here is a list of where you can and can't shop on Thanksgiving in the Gem State.

Stores Closed on Thanksgiving in Idaho

While you may want to spend time before the big meal shopping or getting some last-minute groceries that you have forgotten, you will not be able to go to any store you want, as some of the major retail stores and grocery stores will be closed. Some of the stores closed will be as follows:

Walmart Closed on Thanksgiving

One of the biggest retailers in the country, Walmart, will be closed on Thanksgiving. It used to be that Walmart was one of the most popular places to go on the holiday, especially after the big meal, but since the pandemic, they have been closed on Thanksgiving. 

Costco Closed on Thanksgiving

Costco has long been closed on Thanksgiving, and that won't be changing in 2024. This makes it tough for those who would like to make a quick run to get anything they may need for the holiday, but it will need to be bought the day before or have to wait until after Thanksgiving. 

Target Closed on Thanksgiving

Similar to Walmart, Target used to be a shopping destination on Thanksgiving, but now is closed on the holiday, giving their employees a day off before the biggest shopping day of the year. Target will be crowded on Friday, but on Thursday, no one will be there. 

Barnes and Noble Closed on Thanksgiving

Reading a book and enjoying a morning at Barnes and Noble before spending time with your family seems like a great way to start Thanksgiving, but sadly that will not be an option. If you need a book to read to escape time with your family, make sure to get it before the holiday. 

Kohl's Closed on Thanksgiving

Kohl's will be plenty crowded the following day, but on Thanksgiving, there will be no shopping done as they will be closed. If you spill wine on your clothes, or if you need a nice outfit to wear for the day, it needs to be bought before Thanksgiving. 

Walgreens Closed on Thanksgiving

With many off work, Thanksgiving seems like a good day to run errands you have been putting off, like getting your prescriptions. While all Walgreens used to be open on Thanksgiving, that changed years ago, and will continue this year as well, as only 24/7 stores will be open and select locations. Walgreens will be open before and after Thanksgiving but not the day of the holiday.

While the above stores will be closed, the good news is that not every place will be. There are still plenty of options if you need to make an emergency stop at a grocery store or are looking to escape the house a little bit to get away from family. Some of the stores open are as follows:

Starbucks Open on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving can be a long day with preparing the meal, watching football, spending time with friends and family, and eating again. The day is longer if traveling, making coffee a must. Instead of making some at home, Starbucks will be open, making it an option on the holiday. 

Old Navy Open on Thanksgiving

While other places to shop are closed for a holiday outfit or if an accident occurs, Old Navy is open, making it a place to stop if you need a shirt or pants that perhaps had something spilled on them, or aren't what you are looking for. 

CVS Open on Thanksgiving

Walgreens might be closed, but CVS will be open on Thanksgiving. If you need anything to help you feel better or to prepare for all the food that will be eaten, CVS is a great option to stop at. 

Cabela's Open on Thanksgiving

If you are looking to avoid your family and go to a store that offers some fun and something for the whole family, stop at Cabela's. Entertain your children with the fish, play the shooting game, or do some early Christmas shopping. 

Albertsons Open on Thanksgiving

If there is something you forgot food-wise and do have to make that emergency visit to the grocery store, Albertsons will be open, which is great news in Idaho, considering it is where it originated from. Other grocery stores might be closed, but Albertsons has you covered this holiday.
