What Would You Do? Being at an Active Shooting in the Gem State
What would you do? What would you do if you were out in public, at a massive gathering, and an active shooter started firing in the crowd? You see it on the television and the horror stories of these incidents occurring, but what would you do if you were present for one? It is easy to sit on the couch and say you would do this, or you would do that and plan it out, but it isn't always that simple. In the moment, fear can take over, logic can go out the window, and everything you thought you would do can leave your mind. Hopefully, you never have to find out, but if present for an active shooter, what would you do?
Being Present During an Active Shooting
Over the weekend, an assassination attempt took place at a Donald Trump rally. One in the crowd was critically injured, one was pronounced dead, and the shooter was pronounced dead as well. It was a tragic incident that should have never happened, but that can be said about many shootings that have taken place in the history of the United States. While nobody wants to ever go through that experience, it is good to have some sort of plan in place if it ever does occur, knowing that the plan could all go out the window as well. As seen on TV on Saturday night, many in the crowd ducked but didn't run as bullets were flying. Would this be your strategy, or would you run and hide?
What to do During an Active Shooting in Idaho
In the moment, would you pull out your cell phone and record what is happening, or would you be too scared to go that route? Would you duck down and hide behind something or someone, or would you look to run away and get as far from the scene as possible? Does the venue and the amount of people around you dictate what you do? There is no right or wrong answer, other than don't run towards the shots. As long as you live, you make the right decision. Does your game plan determine who is with you? Being by yourself, means surviving, whereas being in some place with your kids, friends, or other family members, could mean protecting them, while still trying to survive.
Hopefully, anyone reading this will never have to make decisions on what to do in a scary situation like this, but it is worth thinking about. The events on Saturday could have ended much worse, and sadly it did for a couple of people. It serves as a reminder that you never know what will happen, and you can't be prepared for everything, but if you found yourself in a situation like the one on Saturday or someplace else where a shooter was active, what would you do?
