Summer is here, but nobody has told mother nature that yet. Hopefully, nobody will as the weather has been decent through much of May and June. We have had a few warm days, but nothing hot yet. There has been plenty of rain, but it has been pleasant, minus a few storms. There hasn't been too much to complain about yet this summer, but many of us are anticipating what awaits in July and August. Because the weather has been so nice, many of us have seen our electric bills stay down because opening the window and perhaps turning on a fan has been sufficient to stay cool. With the heat arriving around the corner, when is the proper time to shut the windows for good, and when is the right time to leave them open to save some money?

With the weather being in the 70s and potentially low 80s in the afternoon, leaving your windows open is recommended. It is likely warmer in your home with the windows closed than when they are open. Turn on a ceiling fan if you have one to spread the cool air around the home, and you should be comfortable these days. Do the same at night, and you should sleep comfortably, with the temperatures in the 50s. Once the heat arrives, that is where things will change, and you may not want those windows open, letting that warm air heat your home more than it already is.

While it might be nice to leave them open now, the time is coming when you will want those windows sealed tight. Once the heat is in the 90s and above, you will want them shut. The rule of thumb is, if it is warmer outside than inside, you want them closed, and when the sun goes down and the temperatures drop, is when you want to open those windows and let the cool air in. If you fill your home with cool air at night, and then shut your windows and blinds to keep the sun out and the heat, you can rest easy and save some money for a bit, as you won't need to turn on the air conditioner as early. Keeping the warm rays of the sun and the hot temperatures out makes you more comfortable and saves money, which makes you happier as well.

While most of this may seem like common sense, rarely do people follow this protocol. It is nice to look out the window and to have natural light in the home, especially in the summer when there are flowers and grass to look at. While the light is nice, it does come at a cost. Stay cool this summer and save some money by following the steps above.
