Two Killed In US30 Crash East Of Twin Falls

Idaho State Police responded Tuesday evening to a deadly crash east of Twin Falls in Southern Idaho.

The accident happened Tuesday evening around 6:30 PM on US-30 east of Lava Hot Springs at mile marker 377.5:

A 48-year-old male from Bancroft was driving eastbound on US30 in a 2015 Toyota 4Runner. A 24-year-old female from Kingwood, Texas, and her 25-year-old female passenger from Texas City, Texas, were traveling westbound in a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu. The Chevy crossed into the eastbound lanes where a head-on collision occurred. The Toyota went airborne, then rolled down the shoulder where it caught fire.
Both drivers succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The passenger of the Chevy was transported by air ambulance to a local hospital. The driver of the Toyota and the passenger of the Chevy were wearing their seatbelts. The driver of the Chevy was not wearing her seatbelt.

The deadly accident caused the closure of the highway for 7 and a half hours as crews worked the scene. The accident is being investigated by ISP.

Mile marker 377.5 on US-30 is on the east side of the mountain between Petticoat Peak and Buckskin Mountain.

Walk Smart Idaho

According to Walk Smart, a pedestrian safety initiative launched by the Idaho Transportation Department, "Children observe a roadway environment from a different perspective than adults" for multiple reasons.

Rule or Law?

While we support the logic laid out in Walk Smart's child pedestrian section, it remains unclear as to whether or not it's actually against the law for kids under 10 to cross the street alone in Idaho.

One on hand, we have ITD making the point that "young children are vulnerable near traffic and should always be accompanied by an adult." On the other hand, Idaho Statute 49-702 , Pedestrians & Bicycles, makes no mention of minors or children 10-and-under crossing streets.
