The PIT maneuver can be a beneficial tactic for law enforcement to use in ending a car chase at low or moderate speeds.

But, the Idaho State Police just shared a crazy video of a pit stop that happened in mid-January in Mountain Home.

115 Mile Per Hour Idaho Police Chase Ends in a Crazy Pit Stop

Normally a PIT maneuver is utilized by police to stop a vehicle by causing it to spin out. The driver will lose control of their vehicle and it will stall out. That’s in an ideal situation. A study by Homeland Security found that the effectiveness of a PIT maneuver varies greatly depending on the type of vehicle, speed, and the driver's response.

But with the pit stop in the video from the ISP, it wouldn’t have mattered what the runaway car was or who was driving it. When an actual pit comes into play - you are forced to stop.

ISP Get Help in a High-Speed Chase From an Unexpected Source

It may be the first police ‘PIT’ maneuver in history that was non-contact. As you can see in this video, the driver went into a construction zone and straight into a giant pit in the ground.

This was a dangerous car chase as the driver had hit speeds up to 115 miles per hour on I84, endangering other drivers. In a best-case scenario, the driver made a bad decision that didn’t endanger any other drivers or vehicles by driving into a construction zone and letting the ground swallow his car.

Miraculously, the driver was able to walk away from the crash but continued to make bad decisions by brandishing a knife and refusing to listen to the officer. The trooper was forced to use his Taser to subdue the driver and was assisted by officers from the Mountain Home Police Department.
