Some of you are going to hate this since we just started fall and we’ve been having summer temperatures, but winter is coming, and Southern Idaho’s first snowfall could happen even sooner.

Winter is just over 70 days away, and the average first snowfall date in Southern Idaho is only about 40 days away. So, if the thought of seeing white has you seeing red, sorry.

What is the Average Date of Twin Falls’ First Snowfall

Our fall season so far has felt very summery. The last few days have been hitting at least 80 degrees, though temperatures should drop considerably this weekend. The warm weather inspired a conversation, and a bet, between my kids about when we’ll get our first real snowfall in Twin Falls. The rule is it has to be enough to cover the ground. One of my kids is optimistic and said before Halloween, and another is more of a skeptic, saying it will happen some time in January. I like the snow, so I’d be fine with it happening this weekend, but historically we are still over a month from the first snowfall.

Based on previous years, the average date for the first real snowfall (a measurable amount of at least 0.1 inch) is around November 19th. We’ve had snow much earlier and much later, so the window is pretty big if you also want to make a guess.

When Should We Expect the First Real Snowfall in Twin Falls

In 2025, we had the first light snowfall on November 30th, then a few snow showers between December 1st and 2nd. In 2024, we had light snow on October 18th and scattered snow on October 31st, then a few rounds of snow on November 18th.

Technically, there is a chance of snow this weekend as the temperatures plummet, but this year, the forecast is showing a possibility for our first real snowfall on November 25th. That could be bad news for people with Thanksgiving travel plans.

If we do get snow this weekend, don’t get too excited, and don’t eat it. At least not yet. You need a good layer of snow before you should eat it; otherwise you’re basically just scraping it up and whatever other yuck is on the ground with it.
