It may be an early sign that summer is almost over and outdoor recreation will be ending soon in Idaho, but it is getting harder to find open docks in Southern Idaho for boat access.

Some locations are still closed because of the Quagga Mussel infestation and eradication attempt. Others require a lengthy boat inspection and cleaning and at least 2 popular boat docks near Twin Falls are closed for repairs.

Twin Falls Power Plant Lake and Boating Access Closed Until 2025

The latest on the list of closed boat docks is at the Twin Falls Power Plant Park. I took my family out over the weekend to get in what could be the last day of good weather boating and found this sign at the top of the park.

We sat in the road for a while debating what to do. We knew we had to get on the water as the forecast for the future only shows rain and gloomy days. But it was a little late in the afternoon and we couldn’t travel far. Our options at that point were Centennial Park or Murtaugh Lake. While we appreciate the work they are doing at Centennial Park with the boat inspections and cleaning, we decided it was a better use of our time to head to Murtaugh Lake.

It’s a further drive, but parking is never an issue, and no time is used at a boat cleaning station.

Picnic and Grassy Areas Still Open at Twin Falls Power Plant Park

I’m torn in my opinion of the upgrades happening at the Twin Falls Power Plant. Over the last few years, parking with a boat trailer has become a massive issue, and the number of people playing in the water at the dock…and on the boat ramp water…has become dangerous at times. Will the upgrades only bring more people and make the location worse?

Hopefully the upgrades, which include a vaulted toilet instead of the Port-a-potty and more beach area, will include paved parking and designated parking for trailers.

While the boat area is closed for the rest of the year (FYI - North Park at CJ Strike will close October 7th for dock upgrades), the Power Plant Park has a lot of area that can still be used for family fun. There are grassy areas and picnic areas, some of which can be reserved in advance on the Idaho Power website.
