PENDELTON, Oregon (KLIX)-Close to 100 cars and trucks were involved in a pileup on Interstate 84 in northeastern Oregon Monday afternoon that brought traffic to a standstill. According to Oregon State Police, emergency crews were called out to an area between Pendelton and La Grande for a multi-vehicle crash involving passenger cars and commercial trucks as snowfall hit the mountain pass; OSP's original estimate figured 98 vehicles were involved.

When crews arrived they could hear cars crashing down the roadway. A large number of local emergency crews were dispatched to the area and worked to treat hurt passengers and get them moved out. There have been no reports of how many people were injured or if there had been any fatalities. People that were not injured were taken out in three busloads to the Pendelton Convention Center. As of 9:30 p.m., the interstate remained closed between Pendelton and La Grande. Crews were working to clear wrecked vehicles and free others that were stranded. Westbound I-84 from Ontario was closed because of limited parking available in Baker City and La Grande because of a large amount of traffic backed up. Only emergency vehicles and tow trucks were being allowed into the area. Stranded travelers in Ontario were told to stay there overnight until Tuesday.
