Mortars and other aerial fireworks can only be set off at public displays, and require permits and permission from the city. They are against the law for people to light off during residential fireworks gatherings due to the extreme fire danger and safety risks.

Punishment for those illegally lighting off aerials in Idaho can include fines and jail time, according to state government websites.
