There have been several motion pictures made throughout the Gem State over the past 80 years that many movie fans cherish.

Perhaps the most famous director ever once used sections of an Idaho forest as a backdrop to complete a drama and love story about the afterlife that was released during the Christmas holiday nearly 36 years ago.

The movie also featured one of the most iconic actresses of all time, Audrey Hepburn, who, according to Amblin, took the part so she could get the opportunity to work with Steven Spielberg.

The film Always came out on December 22, 1989, and featured John Goodman, Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, and Audrey Hepburn. The story is about a pilot (Dreyfuss) who was killed after crashing his plane while fighting a fire. He returns in spirit form to look after the love of his life (Hunter).

The incredible flying and outdoors scenes were shot primarily in western Montana. Washington State and Idaho (Boise National Forest) are listed as filming locations as well, according to IMDB.

Libby, Montana, one of the main filming sites, is 80 miles east of Sandpoint, Idaho. One of the other heavily used locations in the movie, Lind, Washington, is 100 miles west of Moscow, Idaho.
