Pretty soon we'll be surprised to find out that TV shows that aren't based on comics are being developed.

The newest comics-based show coming to the airwaves is Riverdale, an Archie Comics series that has been picked up by Fox. Arrow and The Flash producer Greg Berlanti's production studio will produce the show, and the pilot will be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Archie Comics' chief creative officer and writer of Afterlife with Archie. According to an Archie Comics press release, the show will be more like Twin Peaks than Leave it to Beaver.

It's a "bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealistic twists of small-town life plus the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade," the release states. Maybe Archie will find a Necronomicon. Maybe there'll be a murder mystery!

Here's what Aguirre-Sacasa had to say about the show:

This is something we’ve been working on for awhile now, figuring out the best way to bring these characters to life for what will be, essentially, the first time. The entire team working on Riverdale is as passionate about Archie as [Archie Publisher and co-CEO] Jon [Goldwater] and I are, so it feels like the stars have finally aligned for Archie and the rest of the gang.

According to the release, the show will feature Archie Andrews and his love triangle with Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge, "popular gay character" Kevin Keller, Archie's rival Reggie Mantle, Jughead, and other Archie characters, including Josie and the Pussycats (!).

And, of course, it makes sense that the show would be on Fox. After all, the Riverdale Gang has already been on The Simpsons:

And who can forget Archie: To Riverdale And Back Again?

Well, hopefully everyone.
