For many families, the kitchen is a gathering spot for conversation and bonding. When preparing food for loved ones, it's important to avoid doing things that could jeopardize someone's health.

One of the biggest threats to a family's health around the home is an unclean kitchen. Foodborne illness happens when food comes into contact with bacteria that wasn't properly managed. An example of a scenario that could cause such an illness would be a kitchen countertop that had undetected, raw chicken juice on it.

These microorganisms can transfer from the surface, utensils, or from the incorrectly prepared food itself, which can make someone very ill from exposure to bacteria such as salmonella. We all know that consuming expired foods is another way to get really, really sick.

It turns out, we should be tossing out any plastic cutting boards we own. They are basically magnets for bacteria that are almost impossible to fully get rid of. Wooden cutting boards are much better and easier to get completely clean, according to Science Direct.

Bacteria can burrow into the grooves of plastic boards and remain there for a period of time. Microplastics also get released and are almost invisible to the naked eye and can end up mixing in with food.

Foodborne illnesses affect more than 40 million Americans every year, according to University of Florida research.
