Elder abuse comes in different forms and happens to seniors in every state in the country. Two states in the Pacific Northwest have seen alarming reports of this type of abuse and are among the top five when it comes to the highest rates of incidents annually.

Elder abuse is shocking, and many people might be surprised to find out what warrants this kind of crime. When some think of the word abuse, physical contact is the first thing that comes to mind.

While committing the physical act might be the worst type of abuse a person can inflict upon someone else, other forms can be equally as damaging. There are seven forms of elder abuse, according to the Nursing Home Abuse Center.

Aside from physical, mental, sexual, neglect, self-neglect, abandonment, emotional or psychological, and financial abuses are also included in the cycle, according to NHAC. Aggressively confronting an elderly person can be viewed as abusive behavior without physical contact ever being made.

According to data provided by Newsweek, Oregon and Washington State have high incidents of reported elder abuse compared to other states. Texas, Missouri, and Maine also have high rates of these types of crimes against the elderly. There are several ways to report instances of elder abuse, including encouraging the victim to have a discussion with his/her doctor.
