For those seeking a cross-country adventure that doesn't include falling asleep at the wheel or spending a fortune on gas, you can find some great deals if you don't mind a few stops and strangers along the way. One travel website is walking people through a process that will take passengers to the East Coast from Salt Lake City for roughly $200.

I have never taken a legitimate train ride, and it's one of my many regrets in life so far. Learning the piano is also way up there, but that's another post for a later date. There are quite a few train routes that give riders a good taste of America, you just have to do some online digging to find them.

My only experience so far with anything resembling the railway was when I took my young daughter to Santa Cruz to ride the Thomas the Train attraction out of Roaring Camp.

My only experience so far with anything resembling the railway was when I took my young daughter to Santa Cruz to ride the Thomas the Train attraction out of Roaring Camp. The train slowly backed up for about three miles into the Santa Cruz mountains, then pulled forward back to the depot; I didn't exactly exit feeling like Brad Pitt in Bullet Train, but my kid loved it and that was good enough for me.

One traveler who documented his coast-to-coast train ride shared some great advice for anyone who would like to see more of this incredible country of ours. He shared the 3,400-mile route he took from San Francisco to New York along with the costs he accrued. It has inspired me to start a dialogue with my family to perhaps emulate this guy's trip.
