Every summer the Idaho Army National Guard is called into duty to assist with lost and injured hikers. They answered a distress call this week and the dramatic video was uploaded to YouTube.
The Idaho Army National Guard did an amazing job with their response, as did the Custer County Search and Rescue.
It takes a special type of individual to pursue a living rescuing strangers. I've seen numerous rescues while living in southern Idaho in the Snake River Canyon. I remember being near the Perrine Bridge a few years back when a BASE jumper suffered an injury and had to be airlifted out.
Thompson Peak is a 10,750-foot mountain located near the town of Stanley, Idaho. On July 6, the Idaho Army National Guard assisted Custer County Search and Rescue and airlifted an injured hiker off the mountain, according to a story shared by the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service.
A video of the rescue was uploaded to YouTube this week. It shows the moments the rescuer was lowered from the helicopter and made contact with the injured hiker. As the two are being pulled up to the helicopter, they are swung around and spin rapidly before making it safely inside the aircraft.
There was no mention of the severity of the injury the hiker sustained, but he/she can be seen waving to another person as the two are heading upward, so the victim was conscious at the time of the rescue.
