Why Are Some Twin Falls Drivers NOT Slowing Down in School Zones?
Twin Falls has a driving problem. That's not news. But, there is a sense of urgency that we address a specific problem that involves some Twin Falls drivers not slowing down in school zones when students are present.
No one is in such a hurry where jeopardizing the lives of kids and/or crossing guards is worth it.
This issue is a personal one for me. My wife walks my kids to school every day. Multiple times, she and my kids have been in the crosswalk with a crossing guard present and cars have not slowed down or stopped. The crossing guard has told her that several times already this year she has nearly been hit by traffic. This is even more staggering considering that school has only been back in session a couple weeks.
In case you haven't seen the speed limit signs and flashing lights, there are speed limits specifically for the time of day when schools are in session. Here's more breaking news. When students are in the crosswalk, you stop. Period.
I'm not gonna say that this is the problem for a majority of Twin Falls drivers, but it's obviously an issue for some. Twin Falls Police regularly monitor school zones, but they can't be everywhere at once. Crossing guards are defenseless against drivers that won't obey the law.
I'm not willing to wait for a tragedy to happen before I say something. If drivers don't start taking school zone speeds and crosswalks seriously, something needs to be done to them to make them care. No one is in such a hurry where jeopardizing the lives of kids and/or crossing guards is worth it.
