University of Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne announced Wednesday that he will be retiring effective January 1, 2013. Let’s take a look at some highlights from his Hall of Fame career:

While the 75-year-old Osborne is most widely known for his time the Cornhuskers’ head football coach, he was hired as athletic director in 2007 and his impact on Nebraska athletics is difficult to overstate. After just five weeks on the job, he fired football coach Bill Callahan after a 5-7 season (Callahan had two losing seasons in four years after Nebraska had not had a losing record since 1962) and began the process that resulted in the hiring of Bo Pelini.

Osborne was also instrumental in the Cornhuskers’ move to the Big Ten conference. Furthermore, he has helped spearhead efforts to expand Memorial Stadium, begin construction of a new basketball arena, and provide other upgrades to university facilities.

Osborne served as the Cornhuskers’ head coach from 1974-1997, winning 255 games and three national championships (1994, 1995 and 1997). He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

After retiring from coaching, he served three terms as a member of Congress representing Nebraska’s third congressional district before losing a Republican primary for governor in 2006. The following year, he was brought back to serve as athletic director after Steve Pedersen was fired.

Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman said he has hired a search consultant and begun interviewing potential candidates for the position, but did not set a timeline to name a replacement.
