Ahhh, my favorite time of the year. The time where everything is a party with food included and your wardrobe is oversized sweaters so no one can tell you've been overeating for three months.

It's never too early to start thinking about what you're going to eat on Thanksgiving, so Mental Floss put together this list of 10 facts about your favorite Thanksgiving foods:

  • Green bean casserole was invented by a Campbell soup employee. Dorcas Reilly was tasked with coming up with recipes to put on can labels in the 1950s.
  • Cranberry sauce is canned upside down. This is done so the sauce comes out in a perfect cylinder shape. Open cans upside-down for best results.
  • Some festivals feature mashed potato wrestling. Festivals in Maine, South Dakota and Minnesota all feature a form of this starchy wrestling.
  • Sweet potatoes aren't really potatoes. They aren't yams either!
  • The pumpkin pie you're eating likely doesn't contain pumpkin. If it's made from canned pumpkin puree, it's probably another type of squash.
  • Turkey probably won't make you sleepy. Blaming tryptophan makes us feel better, but it's the gorging and the booze that's making you tired.
  • Whether you call it dressing or stuffing depends on where you're from. They are the same thing, but it's dressing in the South, and stuffing in the North and western states.
  • The largest serving of macaroni and cheese weighed 2469 pounds. And it set a Guinness World Record in 2010.
  • The origins of the turducken go back to the 18th century. A cook book published in 1774 is the first known instance that explains how to cook a bird within a bird.
  • There's a "Brussels sprout gene." If you just can't stand the taste of these little cabbages, it could be a gene thing.
