This just in: some people still are still purchasing coasters that also double as tangible movie holders.

I mean, I would have guessed there are a FEW people buying DVDs, but those sales numbers are still in the billions of dollars.  Who knew?  I haven't bought a movie since about 2004 when I discovered you can watch movies for a MONTH for less than it costs to buy ONE movie.

Here's what I found most interesting from Variety.com's article on sales reports for the first quarter of 2014:

  • Total movie purchases including both digital and DVDs in Q1: $2.15 billion.  This is 7.3% less than a year before.
  • Streaming subscriptions (i.e. Netflix, Hulu, etc.) are UP over 23% from a year earlier
  • More shocking news: rentals were down.  Un.  Freaking.  Believable.
