Don’t Barf on Boise State’s Blue Field!
First, don’t read this near mealtime. Reminiscent of a National Football League quarterback named Donovan McNabb who experienced jitters in a big game, a Kent State lineman had a similar issue. At the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl and on the sacred blue turf of Albertsons Stadium. He got called for a penalty!
McNabb didn’t get a flag but instead made a mess of a teammate’s uniform.
It Didn't Change the Outcome on the Field
Kent State lost to the Wyoming Cowboys and it wasn’t close, however. The visitors from Ohio were in scoring position at the time of the foul. The final was 52 to 38, dropping Kent State to seven wins versus seven losses on the year. Wyoming finished with seven wins and six losses. These aren’t great teams but bowl games are generally good for local businesses and keep the name of participating football teams in the minds of potential recruits.
We Used to Call it the Butterflies
I had a teammate in high school and the guy loved apples. He was an exchange student from Brazil. On my way to a game one weekend my mom sent me to the locker room with a bag of apples. As we were dressing, he was gorging himself with one apple after another. The big spies my mom used for pies.
“Careful,” I told him. “You’ll get sick!” “I’m not worried,” he replied. “I’m not going to play anyway.”
Then he played. He was unwell.
We used to call the pre-game jitters “butterflies”. It was the fluttering feeling I would get when we rushed onto the field. I also saved my big meal until after a game or practice. I’d come home, have two cubed steaks and some vegetables and call it a night.
