The Food and Drug Administration has announced that it is now illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21. The federal minimum age of sale of tobacco products is officially 21.

Originally, it was thought the increase in age was going to take anywhere from 6 months to a year to go into effect. However, it was announced yesterday that the president signed legislation putting it into essentially immediate effect.

The legislation is an amendment to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. This puts a ban on all sales of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21 including cigarettes, cigars and e-cigarettes.

I am not sure what this is going to mean for the teens who are already smokers. I assume they are going to have to quit. The FDA has six months to finalize the Tobacco 21 law though.

I am not sure that this law is going to make much of a difference to those who want to smoke under 21. Sure, it will make it harder for them to get access to tobacco products but that doesn't mean the use is going to stop. I am not a smoker but I am also not really sure how this is going to change things.

I guess time will tell whether or not changing the age of smoking to 21 is going to make much of a difference. Hopefully it will hinder some future generations from picking up the habit but again, only time will tell on that one.
