Scary movies and October just feel right together.

Indoor heaters are firing up, windshields are getting frosted over, the leaves are beginning to fall, and people are putting 12-foot, Home Depot skeletons in their front yards. You know October is in full effect.

Our family bonds this time of year over popcorn, hot chocolate, a crackling fire, and scores of humans getting slaughtered in some capacity on the 70-inch. Whether it's serial killers and zombies, or cryptids and clowns, October is the month for shows and movies that make us check closets, look behind shower curtains, and lock doors before going to sleep.

Films like Phantasm, Children of the Corn, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Howling, Hellraiser, The Thing, and many more were shown to me before I started the seventh grade. A survey of 2,000 Americans found that two-thirds reported watching their first horror film as a child, according to the New York Post.

When most people think of Utah, they think of Mormons and stunning national parks. Utah has been featured as a backdrop in some of the most disturbing movies ever made. A personal favorite, Hereditary, was released in 2018 and filmed throughout Summit County, including West High School, according to Avalanche Studios.

Halloweens four and five, Midsommar, The Stand, Exorcist II, and Carnival of Souls were some others that included sequences in Utah.
