Kids love it because they get to sleep in, they don't have to do schoolwork, and they can stay home. Parents dread it because they have to find childcare or have to readjust their schedules to help take care of the children and entertain them. Snow days aren't typically planned, and unlike the summer, you can't say go play outside all day or take them to the park to let their energy out. Cabin fever kicks in, and parents will go insane with their children home during these cold wintery days. Here are some fun things to do to help pass the time and keep your sanity when your children are forced to stay home for a snow day in Idaho.

If there is snow on the ground and the kids are home, why not take advantage of it? You can build a little slope in your yard if you have little ones, or perhaps there is a hill nearby you can walk to, so you don't have to get out on the road. Sledding is a fun activity that you can only do in the right conditions, and a snow day is the right condition.

Not everywhere in the country gets enough snow to build a snowman, a fort, an igloo, or to have snowball fights. If a snow day has been called in Idaho, you know there is plenty for all the above. Bundle up, get outside, and be a kid again with your children and teach them the fun of a proper snow day. It will use up their energy, burn calories for you, and create memories and fun for the whole family.

Put away the electronics and pull out an old-fashioned board game for some family game fun. Teach your kids how to play the classics, see if you can finish a game of Monopoly without someone getting upset, or try a game that has been sitting in the closest that nobody in the family has played before. Many of us have them, but how often do you sit down and play a board game?

Movies During a Snow Day

With being unable to go anywhere, how about turning on some movies and having a marathon? You can put on snow-related movies like 'Snow Day,' 'Jack Frost,' or 'Frosty the Snowman.' Perhaps you decide to watch some Disney classics or put on a show and binge-watch it. It is a great day to leave the lights off and watch some fun family movies.

With the lights off, a movie playing, and the heater on, odds are you will find yourself drifting, as will the kids. Take advantage of them falling asleep, and take a nap yourself. A family nap could be what everyone needs, especially if the snow day falls in the middle of the week.

While board games are fun, sometimes a puzzle is a better way to go. When was the last time you did a whole puzzle? Have your children completed one? With a whole day, and maybe a couple off school, it is a great time to do one to pass the time. Do it the entire day, do it in shifts, or do a piece as you walk by. It is a fun way to spend a snow day.

Arts and crafts are a great way to help children be entertained when stuck inside and to use their creative side. They can color, they can paint, they can make bracelets or any other kind of craft. The best part about this is that it usually keeps the kids quiet, and they have something to be proud of when it is done.

While this one may not seem fun, some kids enjoy shoveling snow and can make extra money doing so. Put a shovel in their hand and let them get to work. It will benefit you, and the neighbors, and the kids will have some spending cash. Having your children help you can help the work go faster, and it can be fun flinging the snow at each other, burying someone, or turning it into some other game.

There could be a few more snow days in the forecast this year before spring, and if you are pulling your hair out with the kids being home, check the list above and try one of these activities. There are many other things you can do, but with being stuck at home, options are limited. Instead of dreading the snow days, enjoy the time with the kids and have a little fun instead.
