A popular food item at one of the biggest fast food chains in the world has temporarily been taken off of the menu in select states, including in portions of Idaho. The Quarter Pounder at McDonald's has been removed from menus in Colorado, Kansas, Utah, and Wyoming, and select portions of other states, including the Gem State due to making people ill in the Western United States. The popular hamburger is believed to have led to 49 illnesses while hospitalizing 10 and leading to the death of one person in Colorado. Here is what you need to know about eating the Quarter Pounder, and why it has been in the news this past week.

The reason for the Quarter Pounder being removed from menus is due to an E. coli outbreak that happened earlier this week. At the time of writing there are 49 known cases, with more than half occurring in Colorado, nearly double digit cases in Nebraska, and a handful in Wisconsin. States surrounding Idaho such as Wyoming, Utah, Oregon and Montana have also seen at least one case. The one thing that these individuals have in common is that they all ate the Quarter Pounder. Because of this, McDonald's has pulled the popular burger in these states as well as select parts of other states near the known cases. While many have heard about E. coli, not everyone knows what it is. If you have eaten McDonald's lately and think you may have E. coli, there are certain symptoms to look for. The symptoms will likely take a day to reveal themselves but can take up to 9 days in certain cases after consuming the food. Symptoms include fever, nausea, stomach cramping, diarrhea, and vomiting. In severe cases, there can be bloody diarrhea, infections, and other life-threatening conditions. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, contact a health provider immediately.
