There is a common phrase that states 'lightning never hits the same place twice,' but what happens when it hits too close to you? It may not take twice to do damage when one strike is all it takes, and perhaps the lightning doesn't even have to directly hit a target to do damage. When hiking during a thunderstorm, being struck by lightning is a common fear. It is known to hit trees, water, and towers most commonly, but sometimes it will directly hit the ground sending waves below our feet. Recently, a group of teenagers hiking had a scary moment when lightning struck near them, and it was all caught on camera.

Lightning Knocks Teen Unconscious in Utah

Recently a group of teens hiking in Utah experienced a scary moment when lightning struck the ground nearby, knocking a few off of their feet. A group of teens with the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints was hiking in Salina Canyon in Utah when it began to rain. Lightning struck nearby and while nobody was struck directly, it had enough force to knock one young man unconscious and send seven other teens to the hospital. You can see in the video above the scary situation that occurred.

The odds of being struck by lightning are slim, but as the video above shows, being near where it hits can be damaging and terrifying as well. Let this video above serve as a reminder to always check the weather forecast before going on a hike, camping, or on the lake or river. At times, storms come out of nowhere, but if there is one in the forecast, it is best to delay or cancel your plans. Do not stand under trees if there is lightning, do not be in or on the water, and drop and leave any metal you have immediately.  If someone you know is ever struck, call 911 immediately.
