Groundhog Day has come and gone, and according to the results, winter is set to last another six weeks. While much of the country would agree with this after a massive winter storm saw record-setting numbers of snowfall, other parts of the country are still waiting to see the winter weather. With the calendar now in February and some places still waiting for a good snowfall, winter seems to be skipping some places this season. It is fair to ask, was the groundhog wrong, and has winter already ended in Idaho?

Winter in Idaho

A better question might be, did winter ever begin? Christmas was warmer than usual this year, the snowfall in the mountains has been lacking all season long, and kids have yet to have a snow day in much of the Gem State this winter. Temperatures to end January and start February feel more like spring than winter, and looking ahead, the forecast continues to look much warmer than you would expect for this time of year in Idaho. As the days tick by, the hope of snow lessens. Yes, there have been a couple of days of snow, but nothing as built up, lasted longer than a day, and it hasn't been what Idahoans are used to. Even the mountains in the distance, while white, are not nearly as covered as usual.

Is Winter Over in Idaho?

Despite what the groundhog said on February 2, winter may have already passed Idaho by. There are still bugs out in February, which is uncommon for this time of year. There are children out riding bikes and skateboarding, instead of sledding or building a snowman. Trampolines are staying intact, instead of collapsing from the snow, and children and adults are outside using them. This isn't the winter that most think of when they think of Idaho, and while most in the area know that winter comes in waves, instead of asking when the second or third winter is coming, the question is now: Is it over? If the answer is yes, how does Idaho feel about this, as it would be one of the warmer winters in some time?

While there could still be some cold mornings, some days when a fire should be lit, or some windows that need scraping, winter seems to be passing by in Idaho in 2026. It might be premature to call it, but odds are looking better and better by the day that winter is over in Idaho for this season.
