Thousands of children die from drownings in the country every year. The one day of the year dedicated to prevention and safety in the water is coming soon, and Twin Falls has a number of resources to help area children learn to swim.

It's estimated that between 3,500 and 4,000 children between the ages of one and nine drown every year in the United States, according to data from stopdrowningnow.org. There are a large number of adults in the U.S. that also have never completed swimming lessons, and my wife is one of them.

I learned how to swim in the ocean at a very young age. My mother was a sunbather and spent just about every weekend at the beach, so I got used to water from the get-go. In the summer of 2019, my wife and three-year-old began taking lessons at the Twin Falls City Pool, and it was very beneficial to both.

Although my son didn't entirely learn to swim, it was a great introduction to water safety. My wife overcame her fear of the water, but again, still needs to log some more water time before she'll be fully confident.

Twin Falls has a number of city swimming programs to research for all age levels. National Learn to Swim Day is Saturday, May 20. It's a great opportunity to contact the city pool to see if they are conducting any lessons that weekend.

Please help prevent drownings in Idaho by making sure your kids learn to swim.
