A very serious health scare is causing concern for residents of a lake community that shares borders with Nevada and California.

Health officials are urging anyone who may have visited a popular lake 400 miles from Idaho's southern border to be vigilant about their health.

A potentially deadly infectious disease has been reported near southwestern Nevada and eastern California. A report of at least one person testing positive for the Yersinia pestis virus has been confirmed in Lake Tahoe.

With many Idaho, Utah, and Washington State families recently returning from vacation for the start of the school year, anyone who recently spent time near Lake Tahoe should visit their local doctor if flu-like symptoms begin.

Lake Tahoe is a day's drive from southern Idaho and is the sixth-largest lake in the United States, according to The Tahoe Fund. More than 14 million people make the lake their preferred vacation destination each year, including a large number of those living in the Pacific Northwest.

To date, there have been no reports of the disease having turned up in surrounding states linked to this isolated case, according to ABC News. Symptoms of Yersinia pestis, commonly referred to as Plague, include fever, headache, chills, and fatigue, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Head immediately to your local healthcare provider if you spent time in Lake Tahoe recently and have developed these symptoms, as the disease can be fatal if left untreated.
