Idaho winters are known for providing great outdoor adventures on skis, snowboards, snowshoes, and snowmobiles that can cross borders into other states like Wyoming and Montana. A group of snowshoers recently displayed the beauty of one popular northeastern Idaho trail to all on the Internet, celebrating the start of 2025 with a remarkable backcountry excursion.

Of all the winter activities that begin with the word "snow," snowshoeing is the only one I have yet to do. It's basically backcountry walking with poles and oversized wood and plastic framed support under the boots, which I believe I could manage just fine. When taking part in something like this, the scenery makes it all worth the time and energy.

What an incredible way to begin the new year.

I took a guided snowmobile trip through a portion of West Yellowstone years ago and it was the trip of a lifetime. We plowed around one of Yellowstone's calderas, ate lunch across from a meadow of bison, and returned through near whiteout conditions.

A YouTube short video shared by a group of snowshoers in the morning hours of January 2, 2025, shows some of the prettiest backcountry in northeastern Idaho and Montana. The group began at Lookout Pass near the small community of Sohon, Idaho, and crossed the border into Montana.

An alternative to Lookout Pass is Lolo Pass, which is another way to snowshoe or snowmobile beginning in Idaho and crossing over into Montana. Lolo Pass is located approximately 245 miles west of Bozeman, Montana.

Whichever way you choose to go, you can't lose. What an incredible way to begin the new year.

Remember, when you see a snowplow on the highway - get out of the way, don't ask for names, just know it's one of these guys!
