With the start of summer now a week away and southern Idaho temperatures already above average for this time of year, pet owners need to start taking precautions so our animals don't get overheated. One preventative method is to pay attention to what time we're walking our dogs.

What time do you tend to walk your dog(s)? Many of us have set times we do it everyday, and some just leash up the hounds when the mood strikes.

The hottest times of the day in southern Idaho is between 10 A.M. and 3 P.M., according to The Idaho Commission on Aging. It's the time of day when health officials recommend avoiding too much direct sunlight to avoid conditions such as heatstroke.

When the temperature outdoors climbs to over 77 degrees, it could start to have a negative impact on dogs, according to the Spruce Pets. A dog's paws get just as heated as a human's bare feet when walking on concrete or pavement, so it's imperative that we keep our pets in as much shade as possible when walking in warm weather.

The topic of walking dogs during the heat of day was raised recently (June 11) on Rants And Raves / Twin Falls Area Meta website. One local with the initials SNB posted about people in the Magic Valley choosing bad times to walk their dogs, and many supportive comments followed from area residents.
