WATCH: Tornado, Large Waves Collapse CA Wharf; 3 Swept Out To Sea
A dramatic rescue went underway Monday after a portion of a Central California wharf collapsed into the Pacific Ocean sweeping three people out to sea. Heavy surf has been battering cities up and down the state's coastline for several days resulting in heavy property loss.
Heavy winds and high surf have also caused damage as far south as San Diego, according to reports. Sea walls have done little to prevent flooding in some coastal cities.
California's Central Coast has been receiving the brunt of mild tornado activity and massive waves generated by storm systems over the past 10 days that have caused major destruction in cities such as Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is located 74 miles south of San Francisco. On Monday, over 150 feet of the city's wharf snapped off and dropped into the ocean while repairs were going on, according to details shared by KSBW Action News.
Three people had to be rescued from the ocean as debris drifted out to sea and onto the shoreline, according to ABC 10. Workers could be seen standing on pieces of the wharf awaiting rescue, and some surfers assisted as well.
Local officials have also stated that a small tornado that ripped through the city over a week ago contributed to the damaged wharf. Heavy winds and high surf have also caused damage as far south as San Diego, according to reports. Sea walls have done little to prevent flooding in some coastal cities.
Luckily, no major injuries or fatalities related to the surging ocean have been reported. Coastal flood warnings have been issued as storm activity is expected to continue through Sunday, according to weather.com.
