You Might Have A Record-Breaking Flower In Your Idaho Garden
Gardening is something many people take a tremendous amount of pride in. Did you know the Guinness Book of World Records awards people for growing tall flowers? Perhaps it's time you take a stroll in your Idaho garden for potential champions.
I moved from Idaho back to California in 2021 and took over my family's property in the Sierra Nevada Mountains southwest of Lake Tahoe. I also inherited my mother's massive garden and have learned a lot about the hobby in the past couple of years. I've even begun growing my own vegetables and fruits.
Now that we're already into August, my dreams of a world-record sunflower aren't likely to come true. But maybe in the next couple of years, I can give that German a run for his money; I only have another 17 feet to go.
Another thing I began growing in the spring of 2023 was sunflowers. Up to that point, we had had none on the property. I've discovered that they require watering almost every day when the heat is excessive, and a couple of them are closing in on 13 feet.
I was watering the flowers recently and thought about if there was a world record for the tallest sunflower, and could mine be close. I found out I wasn't even close, but maybe you have a potential world record in your garden and aren't even aware.
According to Guinness, the record stood at 30 feet and was grown in Germany back in 2014. An Indiana man grew one to 25 feet and became somewhat of a celebrity in town.
Now that we're already into August, my dreams of a world-record sunflower aren't likely to come true. But maybe in the next couple of years, I can give that German a run for his money; I only have another 17 feet to go.
