There are currently millions of listings on the property marketplace known as Airbnb worldwide. The company recently announced that they've banned indoor security cameras for its listed properties in response to privacy issues renters have raised over the past several years.

Airbnb has become an incredibly successful company by featuring properties throughout the world that are available for short-term stays for travelers and vacationers. There are over seven million listings spanning 100,000 cities worldwide, according to 2024 data provided by searchlogics.com.

I personally would never pay money to stay somewhere where I'm being watched by a stranger when traveling with family or friends.

Airbnb will no longer allow owners of properties that list them on the website to have cameras installed inside apartments, homes, trailers, or any other type of dwelling used by hosts for short-term renting. This means that Idaho hosts will have to remove them in order to continue using the website.

I'm not surprised by the announcement of a camera ban by the company. Airbnb went live in 2008, so this means renters have been able to monitor those staying in their properties for 16 years. This decision by Airbnb will no doubt have negative repercussions and cost the company some revenue as it's very likely a small percentage of hosts will yank their listings over not being allowed to protect dwellings through the use of cameras. Airbnb made a profit of more than $5 billion in 2023, according to a company earnings report.
