A man serving time in the Idaho prison system for attacking and murdering a former corrections officer violently assaulted another jail staffer over the weekend. The case has raised concerns over whether or not enough is being done to protect the men and women whose job it is to oversee populations at Gem State inmate housing facilities.

There is no shortage of violent offenders in the Idaho state prison system. An Idaho Department of Corrections (IDOC) report from 2023 estimated that of the over 7,000 inmates statewide, more than eight percent were incarcerated due to acts of violence, such as murder, manslaughter, and assault.

Violence against prison employees is a fairly common occurrence. It's a high-risk occupation that requires constant training to stay current on methods of keeping both inmates and themselves safe.

Repeat violent offenders, such as Pompa, can have additional time added to their sentence for continued assaults while in lockup. The most recent incident of violence against a 56-year-old staffer reportedly took place on January 17, according to Idaho News 2.

No details regarding the severity of the injuries were reported, other than to say the victim was at one point in stable condition at a state hospital.
