Simple Game We All Played as Kids is Now Considered Extremely Racist
Nothing is safe to do or say in this world anymore. Every phrase, symbol, color, or animal seems to have been appropriated by some group to misconstrue the intended meaning. One of the latest is apparently the innocent, and normally positive, OK hand gesture.
I’m over 40 years old now and I still play a game that incorporates the OK symbol. I even wrote about this ‘game’ a few years ago called the hand circle game and explained the rules. Basically, you try to get someone to look at an OK hand gesture you make somewhere below your waist. If they look, you get to punch them. That’s it for the game but now there’s a dark twist since the OK hand symbol has also become a sign of racism.
Why Is This Stupid Symbol Game Now Considered Racist
The appropriation of the OK sign started as a joke in 2017 to mess with liberals who get offended by everything. But the hoax quickly gained steam and validity as actual racists began using the symbol as their own. That’s proof that the internet is a dangerous place and anything can become reality if enough people click on it or say they believe it.
This topic, and the reason I researched this and am writing about it now, was brought up by my wife when I got one of my kids with the hand circle game. Now I’m in a weird place: do I keep playing the game knowing that I’m not using it for nefarious reasons or should I stop because someone might be offended because they think I’m being racist? I’m sure there are other things I do that others find offensive, but should I completely change who I am just so I don’t upset someone I may not even know?
