Next Tuesday, is my one month wedding anniversary.  And even though I really didn't take a honeymoon, it's great!  We're still in love and we're still a team.  However, changing your last name is a real bitch!

And I don't think any man actually understands fully how much it really does suck.

For example, the other day I asked my husband to get me a health insurance quote and a quote from his auto insurer.  If we combine our insurances, we can save money.  I want to save money!  Mostly because I want to buy an iPhone.  :-)

So I asked him this and he acted like I wanted to pull out his teeth.  I looked at him and asked him if he understood what I did for him?

I changed my last name for him and that includes all the stupid government paper work that comes with it.  And I've built a reputation from my name.  Heck, I even have a voice over website that I do on the side, which I'm not changing, because my name is a brand.  But I changed it for him!

That's love.  Anyways, enough of my bitching.  This article is here to help anyone who needs to change their last name.  Going into this, I had NO CLUE what I was doing.

So here's the best way to change your last name:

Once you get married, have whoever marries you give you back the marriage license after they've made it all official.  Then YOU personally drop off your marriage license at the county building.  Then right there, you will get it back.  Once you have your original marriage license, it's on!

  • Get a new Social Security Card.  Do this BEFORE you get a temporary ID.
  • Get a new Driver's License.  Be ready for another picture, they took mine at the Twin Falls location.
  • While you're at the DMV, get the title and tags of your car(s) updated.
  • Next tell your job.  Gotta make sure you get paid.  Once your name is changed at your place of work, that should take care of any in-work insurances also.
  • Then tell your bank about your name change: Make sure you can cash your check.
  • Finally, tell all your utilities:  Go down the list of every single bill you pay.  Tell everyone of them.

Wow, that sucks.  But if you love them, I guess it's worth it.  :-)

Here's something else to keep in mind.  Whenever you go to update your name change, you need to bring your new Driver's License, new Social Security Card, and Marriage Certificate.  Those three items are a must!

Are there any men out there who changed their last names for her?
