USGS New Earthquake Scenarios Map For Idaho Might Scare You a Little Bit
Thanks, USGS. For awhile, I was sleeping pretty good at night. Thanks to your new earthquake scenarios map that you just released, that good sleep has probably gone bye-bye.
Yes, our earthquake-loving friends at the USGS have decided to play a what-if game with potential big earthquakes. If you notice that map above, you might recognize that it's a little hard to see Idaho. That's because Woody Harrelson the USGS imagines some very big happenings here. Here are a few of my Idaho favorites:
- M 6.8 Scenario Earthquake - Big Flat-Jakes Creek fault - in this shake scenario, Meridian has a very bad day.
- M 7.2 Scenario Earthquake - Sawtooth fault - this is what happens if the Sawtooths decide to fall on all of us.
- M 7.0 Scenario Earthquake - Lost River fault - If this one happens, your friends in Montana will be a lot closer to you.
- M 6.5 Scenario Earthquake - Upper Yellowstone Valley faults - this is that part of the movie "2012" where the hills explode.
That last one isn't a quake in Idaho, but how can we mention earthquakes without including at least one that involves the Yellowstone super-volcano.
