Northern Oregon beachgoers got quite the surprise this week when a rarely seen, deep-water fish washed up on the sand of one of the West Coast's most famous beaches.

Ecola State Park is one of the top tourist attractions on the West Coast. The area has provided the backdrop for a couple of very famous films including Goonies, Twilight, and Point Break. Cannon Beach, in particular, is located on the northern coast of Oregon and is one of the busiest beaches in the United States due to its film presence.

Giant rocks jut out from the sea, old lighthouses dot the region, centuries-old shipwreck debris can be found, and the warm, white sand is almost therapeutic.

Earlier this week, crowds gathered around an Angler Fish that managed to beach itself just south of the iconic tourist hub. Angler Fish are scarcely seen because they swim in very deep waters not often penetrated by sunlight. They have a unique bioluminescent sack that protrudes from their heads making them one of the more bizarre looking creatures of the sea.

I've visited Cannon Beach a few times, and while it's a bit windy for my taste, the scenery is beautiful. Giant rocks jut out from the sea, old lighthouses dot the region, centuries-old shipwreck debris can be found, and the warm, white sand is almost therapeutic.

If you ever get the chance to drive the Oregon coast, a stop at Ecola State Park should be on your list of places to put your toes in the sand.
