Toughest Idaho Dogs Compete In McCall Sled Challenge Jan 30-Feb 3

If you're a dog fan and want to see some of the toughest in the state of Idaho in action, there's an annual outdoor event that takes place in the mountains north of Boise coming up that just might interest you.

Idaho dog lovers and fans of the great outdoors should mark January 30 on their calendars. That's the day the 2022 Idaho Sled Dog Challenge gets underway. The event puts state dogs to the test in a 300-mile race through some of the prettiest backcountry you'll find anywhere in Idaho.

Beginning Sunday, January 30, and continuing through Thursday, February 3, is the state's annual event that gives onlookers the opportunity to witness Idaho's toughest dogs sweat it out in a race that is the equivalent of driving from Twin Falls to La Grande, Oregon. Three races will be taking place simultaneously in which the winners will get a chance to qualify for the Iditarod and Yukon Quest competition.

More than 20 mushers from states such as Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Montana will compete in the junior (40 miles), 100-mile, and 300-mile races. Approximately $10,000 in prize money is up for grabs. The course will take dogs and their mushers through areas of McCall, New Meadows, Cascade, and Smiths Ferry.
