Parvo is an awful disease that targets puppies and kittens. It is incredibly deadly and highly contagious. It has been traveling through Twin Falls, but this time it is a little different.

Parvo In Twin Falls Is Different

I was speaking with a vet at Valley View Veterinary Clinic who explained to me that parvo going around in Twin Falls is different. I was taking my puppy for his last round of shots and the vet decided to vaccinate outside the building since he had just seen a dog with terrible parvo about an hour prior. They had done everything they were supposed to do to sanitize the building, it was an extra precaution. He stated that the puppy definitely had parvo, but the test results came back negative. Whatever this strain of parvo is, it is fooling tests.

Sign And Symptoms Of Parvo In Kittens And Puppies

Lethargy is one of the biggest signs of parvo. Not wanting to eat, not wanting to drive, getting incredibly skinny, vomiting, having diarrhea, and fever. It can come on very quickly and it is very deadly. If your dog is showing any of these signs, it is best to get them to the vet as soon as possible. The longer you wait the less of a chance you have of survival.

How To Prevent Parvo

Keep your puppies and kittens inside until they are vaccinated. Do not take them to dog parks or camping until they have had all of their shots. If your pet does get parvo and it survives, make sure you keep it home for 6 months to a year because the disease can carry on through feces. Do not take them around other dogs that have not been vaccinated. Bleach your yard to ensure parvo is not living in the ground. It lives in the ground and travels through the dirt.

If Your Dog Is Sick And Doesn't Test Positive For Parvo

If, for some reason, the vet does not take action for treating parvo and they are showing signs of it, get a second opinion or insist that it could be parvo. I have never heard of parvo not testing positive on an exam, but it has been happening.
