A sad story out of southwestern Montana from this past weekend. A skier from Ketchum was killed by a freak avalanche.

The Idaho Statesman reported that 55-year-old Christopher Peterson of Ketchum was caught in an avalanche on Sunday. The avalanche occurred on Henderson Mountain outside Cooke City. Christopher was buried under 6 feet of snow. It took between 15 and 20 minutes to dig him out, but other skiers were not able to save him.

It could happen to any of us that love the mountains and want to experience them this winter. As always, getting a refresher on avalanche safety and preparations is a good thing.
