A voluntary recall has been issued by a North Carolina company that manufactures raw pet food. The product is currently distributed to all 50 states.

Viva Raw LLC has voluntarily recalled select packages of its dog and cat raw turkey food as a precaution against potential listeria contamination, according to information published by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. Viva Raw entered into the pet food business in 2020 and uses organic natural supplements and USDA-inspected meats, according to the company's website.

For those in Idaho who have had this product shipped to them, it is advised that consumers return it for a refund or destroy it so that it can't contaminate other humans or pets.

According to the FDA website, Viva Raw LLC announced the recall on July 1. Listeria is a bacteria that can cause a serious infection and kills nearly 300 people a year, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The bacteria also has the potential to be life-threatening for pets. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever are all symptoms of exposure to listeria which is spread through the handling and consumption of tainted meats.

Five different product variations are included in the recall, according to the FDA. Lot number 21244, which can be found stamped on the packaging, is the only lot that has been recalled by Viva Raw LLC.
