Boise State Back Can Still Top Single Season Rushing Yards Record
Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty's remarkable season continues Friday night as the Broncos (#10) face UNLV (#19) for the Mountain West Championship game. Although it isn't likely the junior back will match or break the all-time collegiate touchdown record set in 1988, he still has a realistic opportunity to eclipse the single-season rushing yards record.

Ashton Jeanty went from a virtual nobody to a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy in 2024. Albertsons Stadium has been selling out and setting attendance records since the 5'9," 215-pound running back from Florida began blazing a path toward greatness back on August 31 in the team's first game of the season. That Saturday night against the Georgia Southern Eagles he rushed for 267 yards and scored six touchdowns, and his foot has remained on the gas pedal ever since.
Jeanty's current 2024 statistics through the regular season are 312 carries, 2,288 yards, and 28 touchdowns. In 1988, Oklahoma State running back and future NFL Hall of Famer Barry Sanders rushed for 2,850 yards and 44 touchdowns during his magical season 36 years ago. Jeanty would need 563 yards (average 282 per final two games) and 17 touchdowns (average nine in last two games) to break Sandres' records in a single season, except the Boise State standout would require two postseason games to accomplish it--the Mountain West Championship and whoever the team plays during Bowl Week.
Sure, sports fans and analysts could argue that Jeanty's season wouldn't match that of Sanders because Barry set these records without needing additional postseason games, and they would be warranted in doing so. Still, Jeanty's 2024 campaign has been historic in its own regard and has reignited the passion for Broncos football in many fans throughout the country.
