The Boise State football program is getting ready to say goodbye to a familiar four-legged assistant who has been part of sideline operations for 4 years.

If you've attended BSU home games regularly, you've definitely witnessed an integral part of the program's possession-changing fluidity on the blue turf. The dark mass of hair that flashes on and off the field between possessions has a name and an important purpose.

'Blitz' the dog, the team's faithful black lab, is preparing to retire officially in the coming days. The dog's career will likely wrap up Friday night following the outcome of the conference championship game between the Broncos and UNLV.

I first saw 'Blitz' in action on October 18 of this year when I attended my first BSU home game. Watching on with my wife and 10-year-old son, we marveled at the dog's speed and skill set. To make the game even better, the Broncos dropped 56 points on the Runnin' Rebels, who the team gets a chance to pummel again this Friday night for the Mountain West Championship in front of the home crowd.

Will this Friday truly be the last time 'Blitz' will handle duties at Albertsons Stadium? I'm guessing we will see him again later on down the road.
