For many, this is their worst nightmare, and it is a situation that is embarrassing no matter how you look at it. We all function the same and doing business in public locations happens, but when the toilet doesn't cooperate, it can make for an awkward situation and a tough decision. If the toilet starts overflowing, what should you do?

Many people avoid going to the bathroom in public for one reason or another. Typically doing a number one isn't bad, but going number two publicly can be traumatizing for people and often embarrassing. We all do it, but it isn't uncommon for someone to fear going in a public location. While the funny noises and disgusting smells play a major factor in avoiding dropping a deuce publicly, another common fear is if the toilet gets clogged, how to handle it. Having water flow over and soaking your shoes is bad enough, but opening the stall to have many people see that you were the one to do it can be embarrassing. It has happened to many people and is nothing to be ashamed of, but what is the best way to handle the situation? 

How to Handle Clogging a Public Toilet

There are a few options when this situation occurs. Reaching in, digging around, and trying to unclog it with your hands is one option, but not one many of us would choose. You can look for a plunger, but the odds are slim that you will find one. Depending on where you are, there might be a bathroom attendant that you can notify, so they can unclog it sooner rather than later. You can tuck your head and sprint out, avoiding eye contact and hoping nobody notices you. One of the better options, might be to just own up to it, deal with the embarrassment, and walk out and warn others not to go in there. There are many options, and depending on where you are might dictate what you do, but either way, the fact the toilet got clogged, will make this moment one you won't look back on fondly.

As embarrassing as it is to admit, I found myself in this situation not long ago at a public airport and had to make a tough choice. I looked around for the bathroom attendant and was unable to find him. I waited around for a few minutes, feeling the stares from those who saw me leave the stall, and after being unable to find anyone who could help, I left.
